Kentucky Country Day School has an immediate need for a Grounds Superintendent. The Grounds Superintendent is responsible for maintaining the athletic fields, campus grounds, and assisting with the removal of snow and/or ice from campus roads and walkways on the 80-acre campus. 9:00 am-5:30 pm shift (Monday-Friday). Due to the nature of the work, some non-traditional hours (including evenings and weekends) will be required.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
Maintain athletic fields using appropriate turf management and lawn care procedures, including lining/striping of playing surfaces, mowing and grading, and seeding turf grass.
Perform ground maintenance and landscaping functions such as grass mowing, tree removal, pruning, mulching, etc.
Prepare fields and facilities for athletics use as necessitated by the school calendar and/or requests from departments.
Performs tasks common to the care of grounds and landscapes by seeding, watering, mulching, fertilizing, and applying chemicals to outside plantings, lawns, and turf.
Removes unsightly trash and debris from public areas by regularly inspecting grounds, drains, rain gutters, etc., for debris; raking, sweeping, and bagging leaves, debris, dirt and trash from streets, parking lots, walking paths and transporting the trash to designated central collection points on a daily basis.
Ensures that grounds maintenance equipment is operational by performing routine, scheduled and preventative maintenance and cleaning of tools, equipment and machines within reasonable capabilities. Including changing oil and filters, sharpening blades, greasing, changing belts, etc.
Assist with snow removal by shoveling, salting, sanding, and operating snow removal vehicles and equipment (i.e. shovels, plows, tractors) to remove snow and ice from stairs, walks, ramps, drives, and parking lots. 24-hour on-call during inclement weather.
Willing and able to go to school to acquire licenses and training to perform necessary tasks (chemical license and equipment training).
May be required to perform campus-wide general maintenance and repairs.
Assist with setup and breakdown/cleanup of events on campus when needed.
Perform other related work as required.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Facilities Director.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Five years of groundskeeping experience required.
Two years of proven supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge of fescue, ryegrass, Bermuda grasses, and maintenance of artificial turf fields, tennis courts and running tracks.
Bermuda turf management experience preferred.
Knowledge of the use and proper disposal of chemicals and pesticides used in groundskeeping and horticultural maintenance.
Knowledge and understanding of proper use of hand tools, including grounds and yard tools and equipment.
Strong work ethic and willingness to work on a variety of tasks and learn new skills.
Work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to read the English language sufficiently to understand written work orders and instructions.
Physical Demands
Ability to lift and carry groundskeeping supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis, prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching on a daily basis.
Ability to work inside and outside as necessary in all seasons.
Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual, electrically powered and/or gasoline-powered groundskeeping equipment and machines. Requires the ability to access facilities and areas which may only be accessible by climbing stairs or by climbing ladders to a height of 15 feet (e.g., for tree trimming).
Must be able to move throughout assigned areas, as the work is performed primarily outdoors, year-round.
Employees in this position are designated as essential employees and must report to work as scheduled when campus offices are closed due to severe weather to help with snow removal and other assigned tasks.
